West Mono Basin Field Trips & Workshop


Save the Date for Upcoming Events!

The West Mono Basin Project is a collaborative effort to restore forest health and reduce wildfire risk to our communities. We invite you to explore the landscapes we all share and learn how to manage risk to your property. This series of events offer two field trips and one wildfire resilience workshop. August 15, Jeffrey Pine Forest Field Trip

Date: August 15, 2026

Time: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Meeting location: June Lake Junction

What to Expect at the Event: We will be meeting at June Lake Junction at 10am sharp. From there, we will consolidate vehicles and travel in convoy to a couple of locations to explore the current state of the forest and riparian areas. Parking space in the field is limited, so please carpool with friends or neighbors where possible. 4wd or AWD vehicles are required to access the sites. Field Trips will be lead by Forest Service staff and supported by the Whitebark Institute environmental planning team. Please be prepared to walk from 1-4 miles over the course of the two hour trip. 

What to Bring:

  • Camera
  • Drinking Water
  • A sun hat, long sleeves, and sunglasses
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Snacks
August 22, Aspen Ecosystem Field Trip

Date: August 22, 2026

Time: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Please be prepared to walk from 1-4 miles over the course of the two hour trip.

October 10, Wildfire Resilience Workshop

Date: October 10, 2026

Time: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Location: Lee Vining Community Center

What to Expect: The Wildfire Resilience Workshop will be facilitated by Whitebark Institute and supported by project partners. The first half of the event will feature a panel led by the U.S. Forest Service alongside regional utility and agency partners to discuss wildfire behavior, lessons learned from past fires, and current conditions impacting local communities. Part 2 will be lead by Kristen Pfeiler of Eastern Sierra Council of Governments, who will walk property owners through actionable steps to manage risk on their land. She will also share details on upcoming home inspection initiatives across the Mono Basin to help residents prepare their properties. Light refreshments will be provided.
