The Eastern Sierra faces complex and interconnected wildfire challenges that span neighborhoods, watersheds, and entire landscapes. Addressing these challenges requires sustained regional collaboration, shared capacity, and aligned priorities. Through the Eastern Sierra Wildfire Alliance (ESWA), Whitebark Institute is proud to serve as a lead partner in building this foundation for long-term community and landscape resilience.
Whitebark’s Role
Whitebark Institute is uniquely positioned to serve as a regional convener because of its ability to work across diverse entities and programmatic efforts. With experience navigating environmental planning, fuels reduction, community engagement, and multiple funding and implementation pathways, Whitebark helps connect partners and align work occurring across jurisdictions and programs. Our role is to support coordination, elevate shared priorities, and strengthen regional capacity over time.
Strengthening Partnerships Across the Eastern Sierra

As a recipient of the Regional Forest and Fire Capacity Program (RFFCP), Whitebark Institute has focused on strengthening a network of regional partners working across jurisdictions, disciplines, and scales. This work supports collaboration among Tribes, local governments, land managers, nonprofits, and community organizations, creating space to share knowledge, coordinate efforts, and leverage resources more effectively. Together, these partnerships aim to help connect work happening from the neighborhood level to broader landscape-scale planning and implementation.
Why Do We Need a Wildfire Alliance?
The ESWA provides a forum to identify shared needs across the Eastern Sierra and align them with future funding opportunities and regional strategies. By coming together regularly, partners can
- Better understand gaps in capacity
- Reduce duplication of effort
- Advance projects that reflect the ecological, social, and political realities of our region

Looking Ahead
Moving forward, we are excited for a year of continued collaboration through quarterly ESWA meetings, bringing together over 50 participants from across the Eastern Sierra. We are grateful to the partners who have been involved from the beginning and who continue to help shape this effort going forward. Your commitment, expertise, and willingness to collaborate are what make this work possible.
